UAE to Europe for less: when to book and what to check

Compare Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah, choose better dates, and spot baggage and fare traps before booking your next flight to Europe.

Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah routes converge on an airplane beside Europe for less typography

The cheapest flight from the UAE to Europe is not always the cheapest way to get there. A low fare can become an expensive trip once you add a suitcase, a late-night transfer and an extra hotel night. Equally, a small change of airport or return date can save money without making the journey worse.

The useful trick is to compare the trip you will actually take. Here is how we would search, what we would check before paying, and which airline details deserve a second look.

1. Start with three airports, not one airline

Search Dubai International (DXB), Abu Dhabi (AUH) and Sharjah (SHJ) separately. Include Dubai World Central (DWC) if a relevant service appears for your dates. A search labelled “Dubai” should not be assumed to include Abu Dhabi or Sharjah.

Check the airline’s current operational updates as well as the search result: routes and restart dates can change. Then run the same dates, passenger count and baggage needs through each search. Then add the journey from your home to the airport and back. For a family, calculate transfers for everyone; for a solo traveller, a late-night taxi can erase a modest airfare saving.

Here is an illustrative comparison, not a live fare: a Dubai flight costs AED 1,600, while an Abu Dhabi option costs AED 1,350. If the second option adds AED 180 in transfers and AED 120 for the bag you need, its total is AED 1,650. The cheaper headline fare has become the more expensive choice.

There is a useful exception to the transfer calculation. Eligible passengers on Etihad-operated flights can use its complimentary Dubai–Abu Dhabi airport shuttle, subject to availability. It must be reserved at least 24 hours before departure. Include travel to the shuttle stop and the connection time in your plan. Etihad shuttle details.

2. When should you buy? Use a window, not a magic day

Our practical planning suggestion is to start comparing around three to five months ahead for an ordinary Europe trip. For fixed school-holiday dates, Eid travel or Christmas and New Year, give yourself more runway: start looking around five to eight months ahead, once flights are available.

These are search windows, not claims about when fares reach their lowest point. If your dates are fixed and a suitable fare is within budget, there is little value in waiting for an arbitrary countdown.

If you are travelling in the next few weeks, compare now. A last-minute bargain is useful only if the dates, airport and destination also work for you.

Start with a price you would be happy to pay for the complete journey. Track two or three workable options, rather than watching every possible European airport. Buy when the total meets that target and the conditions are acceptable.

Do not hold off just because today is not Tuesday. Google's published 2025 booking analysis found only a small difference between purchase weekdays, and its dataset covered departures from US airports. Its “best number of days before Europe” is not a Dubai booking rule. Google's methodology and findings.

3. Change the travel dates before changing the destination

Move both departure and return by two or three days. Looking only at the outbound price can hide an expensive return. Use the date grid or price graph to compare complete trips of similar length. Google Flights search tools.

For a European city break, test dates outside school holidays and major local events. Late April or May, September or October, and winter dates away from Christmas and New Year are useful starting points to compare with peak-summer travel. They are not universally cheap: Easter, trade fairs, festivals and ski holidays can change the result.

Check the hotel before celebrating the flight price. A flight that is AED 200 cheaper during a large exhibition can be poor value if accommodation costs much more.

Also price the first and last day properly. A 1 a.m. arrival may require a hotel booking for the previous calendar night. A very early return can mean paying for a room you barely use and taking a taxi before public transport starts.

4. Compare fare families, not airline reputations

The label “budget airline” does not tell you the final cost, and “full service” does not guarantee a checked bag. Build your comparison around the same luggage and flexibility.

Air Arabia: the bag split matters

Air Arabia's published cabin allowance is a 7 kg cabin bag plus a 3 kg personal item. That does not mean one 10 kg suitcase. Check dimensions as well as weight, and add checked baggage before comparing the fare with another airline. Air Arabia baggage rules.

Look at the fare bundle's cancellation terms too. Being allowed to cancel is not the same as getting all your money back to your card: fees and travel-credit conditions can matter. Air Arabia fare bundles.

flydubai: Lite and Value can produce different winners

Economy Lite includes 7 kg of hand baggage, with checked baggage at a charge. Value generally includes 20 kg and Flex 30 kg, although the allowance can vary by route. Economy meals are included in the current fare table. flydubai fare comparison.

Compare Lite plus the bag you need against Value. The cheapest fare family at the start of checkout may not be cheapest at the end. If you need extra baggage, buying it in advance can cost less than paying at the airport. flydubai baggage options.

Pegasus: “hand luggage” may mean only a small underseat bag

On international flights, Pegasus Light includes an underseat item up to 40 × 30 × 15 cm and 3 kg. An overhead cabin suitcase is not included in that package. Saver, Saver Plus and Comfort Flex include an additional cabin bag up to 55 × 40 × 23 cm and 8 kg under the current rules. Pegasus baggage rules.

For a connecting option, check the airport code on both flights. Do not treat different Istanbul airports as one connection point. Add the luggage you need on the whole itinerary before deciding whether the connection saves enough.

Etihad: check Basic before assuming a suitcase is included

Etihad's current economy fare table lists checked baggage as an extra charge under Basic. Its general rest-of-world allowances are 25 kg for Value, 30 kg for Comfort and 40 kg for Deluxe; verify the allowance shown for your actual journey.

Basic also restricts voluntary changes and cancellation. If dates depend on a visa decision, the difference between Basic and a more flexible fare may matter more than the initial saving. Etihad fare conditions.

Emirates: compare the included allowance with the competing total

For weight-based itineraries such as a standard UAE–Europe journey, Emirates lists 20 kg for Economy Special, 25 kg for Saver, 30 kg for Flex and 35 kg for Flex Plus. Check your ticket, particularly when another airline operates part of the journey. Emirates checked baggage.

A higher initial fare may be competitive after you add bags and transfers to another option. That is a calculation to make, not a reason to assume Emirates will always be better value.

Wizz Air: unavailable for UAE flights this winter

As of 31 October 2026, Wizz Air is not an option for flights to or from Dubai and Abu Dhabi this winter. The airline confirmed cancellation of all services to both destinations from 25 October 2026 through 27 March 2027. Earlier announcements of an October restart have been superseded. October airline statement reported by Aletihad.

Leave Wizz out of your winter price comparison. For travel after that period, check the latest airline announcement and whether your specific flight is actually on sale; the end of a cancellation period is not a guarantee that services will resume.

5. Arrive in one city and fly home from another

If your actual trip runs from Paris to Rome, compare a multi-city ticket: UAE to Paris, then Rome to the UAE. You travel between the European cities separately. This is often called an open-jaw itinerary.

Even if the airfare is slightly higher than a return to Paris, it may remove a backtracking flight or train, another hotel night and a lost sightseeing day.

Compare three options: a conventional return, the multi-city itinerary, and two one-way tickets. None is automatically cheapest. Keep the visa application consistent with the trip you genuinely intend to take.

Nearby airports can help too, but look beyond the city name. Check the airport code, the transfer to your accommodation, the last train or bus, and any overnight stay. A cheaper arrival airport can be excellent for one itinerary and inconvenient for another.

6. A connection can save money. A self-transfer can cost it back

A connecting itinerary sold as one protected ticket is different from two separate tickets assembled into a journey. With a self-transfer, a delayed first flight can leave you buying a replacement for the second.

One traveller described saving €180 by booking separate flights, then facing a missed connection and uncertainty about insurance cover. The useful lesson is to ask what happens when the first flight is late before paying for the apparent saving.

Skyscanner warns that self-transfers can require baggage collection, another check-in and immigration formalities, and that a missed onward flight may mean buying another ticket. Check entry or transit requirements for your passport and the exact transfer. Self-transfer explanation.

For a short holiday, compare a direct flight with a sensible one-ticket connection before trying separate-ticket combinations. Add any transit hotel, meals and lost time. There is no universal “safe” self-transfer duration that removes the risk.

7. Use comparison sites to discover; inspect the seller before paying

Google Flights and Skyscanner are useful for finding alternatives. Once you shortlist a flight, open the airline's own booking page as well. Compare the same fare family, baggage and payment currency.

If an agency is cheaper, find out who handles changes, what its own service fees are and which support channel is available. Direct booking can simplify who you contact; it does not automatically make the ticket cheaper or refundable.

Search for the actual number of travellers from the beginning. A price found for one person may not be available for the whole family. Splitting a group into separate bookings can also complicate changes and assistance during disruption.

Check your bank or loyalty offers only after choosing a sensible itinerary. Read the eligible routes, dates, fare types and discount cap. A promotion is useful if it lowers the total you would otherwise pay.

8. Waiting for a visa? Buy flexibility deliberately

A cheap, non-refundable ticket can become the largest wasted expense if the visa decision is delayed or negative. Follow your consulate's booking-document requirements and understand what you can change or cancel before committing.

“Changes allowed” may still mean a change fee plus the fare difference. “Refundable” may involve deductions, deadlines or credit rather than cash. Read those conditions for the fare you are actually buying.

A short fare hold can give you time to confirm leave or speak to your travel companion. Emirates currently advertises a free 24-hour hold on eligible Economy bookings where offered at checkout. It is a short decision window, not a way to lock a price throughout visa processing. Emirates Hold My Fare.

Your next search, in ten minutes

First, compare DXB, AUH and SHJ for your real passenger count and luggage. Next, move both dates a little and check the accommodation cost. Then compare a direct flight, a practical protected connection and a multi-city return if your route suits one.

Write down the total for the best three options: flights, bags, seats you genuinely need, airport transfers and any extra hotel night. Check cancellation terms, choose a price you are comfortable with, and set alerts if you are not ready to buy.

The best saving is one you still feel good about when you land.
